POST SHOW REPORT ON VIFA 2012

The 5^th Vietnam International Furniture & Home Accessories Fair – VIFA 2012 organized by Handicraft and Wood Industry Association of HCMC (HAWA) and Alliance Handicraft and Wooden Fine Art Corporation (HAWA Corporation).

VIFA 2012 takes place in the situation that the international market is not promising. The organizer’s expectation is the amounts of exhibitors and visitors of the fair are not lesser than VIFA 2011 in order to assert the position of furniture made-in-Vietnam in the world market.

With adequate preparation, VIFA 2012 has achieved the following results:

I. SCALE:

In VIFA 2012, beside the indoor exhibition area, the organizer expanded the exhibition area to outdoor with the total scale of 1,200 sqm.

Indoor exhibition area:

With the scale of 614 booths, VIFA 2012 increased by 3% compared with VIFA 2012 (596 booths). Number of exhibitors is 137 enterprises, increased by 5.4% compared with VIFA 2011 (130 enterprises). Among those, 50.8% are exhibitors of the previous VIFA fairs, 49.2% are new exhibitors (new exhibitors in 2011 made up about 30%). VIFA is becoming a more familiar brand name in the exhibition field and furniture industry.

Outdoor exhibition area:

The scale of indoor exhibition area is not as much as the organizer’s expectation (630 booths). However, the outdoor exhibition area of 1.200 sqm with 7 wood houses designed and constructed by Tran Duc Corp. and the landscape designed in garden-resort style with lawn, ornament trees, shade trees, miniatures … contributed to the enlargement of VIFA 2012’s total exhibition scale. At the first time establishing the “Outdoor exhibition area”, the organizer has supports from outdoor furniture manufacturers: Scansia Pacific, My Tai, Truong Thanh, AA, Hiep Long, Lam Viet, Tran Duc.

Among the exhibitors of VIFA 2012, major are furniture manufacturers (63%), wood materials (26%), handicrafts (11%). HAWA members made up to 53.97% (compared with the number of exhibitors) and 61.3% (compared with the number of booths).

II. VISITORS:

Total visitors of VIFA 2012 decreased by 12.3% (7.164 visitors) compared with VIFA 2011 (8.161 visitors). However, international visitors increased by 11.5% compared with VIFA 2011 (2.777 foreign visitors in 2011 and 2.489 foreign visitors in 2012). This proves VIFA, after 5 years of implementation, attracted more attention from international buyers. This is a very good sign for VIFA.

Top 10 nations best represented countries are almost alike 2011: Singapore, Korea, USA, Japan, China, France, Malaysia, Australia, UK, and Germany. However, the order is changed. Numbers of visitors from Singapore is 459 visitors, reached the first position. It is to say that Singapore buyers are looking for Vietnam’s suppliers to prepare for the opportunities when markets recover in the near future. Following are buyers from Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, and Germany … Major are Asian buyers.

The order of the continents does not change but compared to 2011, visitors from Asian countries increased by 80% (compared to 52.91% in 2011). This demonstrates that Asian economies are developing outstanding. The number of visitors came from three key export markets (USA, Japan, and Europe) this year is lesser than in 2011. Since the debt crisis should extend, EU economy remains bleak in the coming years. This has affected the number of European buyers coming to VIFA 2012. USA is also in a state of economic difficulties, so the number of visitors from USA is in the same state.

In 2011, Japan suffered from the natural disasters. One year after (3/2012), Japan’s economy has recovered and developed rapidly. The number of buyers from Japan is also high, 140 visitors. This is good news for VIFA.

Visitors know about VIFA from 2 main communication channels: magazines & newspapers. Besides, visitors also approach VIFA via website. Website of the fair this year is also professional, so that got more online registration from international visitors.

III. TRADE PROMOTION:

During 4 show days, according to incomplete daily survey, 13 exhibitors got 17 contracts and memos. Contracts signed with buyers major from key markets: Germany, UK, France, USA, Japan, Australia, and Korea …

Typical exhibitors that have many contracts & memoranda are Green Acorn, Le Hoang Minh, Koda Saigon, Lam Hiep Hung, Lam Duong, Thinh Viet, Tan Toan Phat, Bao Hung …

According to the preliminary surveys, total value of the contracts and memos signed during the fair is 2.6 million US dollars.

IV. COMMUNICATION:

Promotional campaign plays an important part in the preparing and executing the fair, the organizer pay much attention to promoting the fair in foreign and domestic communication channels:

V. ACTIVITIES:

Seminar:

There was a Seminar in VIFA 2012: “Promoting export of Furniture & Home Accessories to the US Market”. This seminar attracted many attendants, most are representatives from the exhibitors, who want to get more information related to the furniture field and business activities.

In VIFA 2012, the organizer provides the indoor and outdoor advertising such as indoor banner (3m x 5m), outdoor banner (1m x 5m), standee along the corridor, balloon (3m diameter). These new kind of advertising with suitable rates attracted many exhibitors.

Factory Visit Tour:

This is a new exhibiting activity that the organizer adding to VIFA 2012. After 4 VIFA fairs from 2008 – 2011, the demand of searching for new exhibitors and visitors is high, however, Hall A of SECC is limited so that the organizer can’t expand the exhibition scale. After much consideration, the organizer decided to hold Factory Visit Tour to take international buyers, importers to Showrooms – Factories of 8 exhibitors of the fair: AA, Hiep Long, Ho Nai, Tavico, Bao Hung, Tan Toan Phat, Tran Duc and Minh Phat.

Led advertising:

Purpose of advertising in Led screen is showing video clips on VIFA, HAWA, exhibitors participate in Factory Visit Tour and other exhibitors that have demand on advertising.

VI. CONCLUSION:

VIFA 2012 is more successful than the previous VIFA fairs on the scale enlargement, new activities …

VIFA is showing its professional as an international fair and get more trust and appreciate by both exhibitors and visitors.

Wood firms expect stable consumption in export markets

HCMC – Local wood-working firms are making efforts to maintain their major export markets and expand to potential ones in the midst of economic difficulties this year.

Nguyen Chien Thang, chairman of the HCMC Handicraft and Wood Industry Association (Hawa), said in a press conference introducing the Vietnam International Furniture & Home Accessories Fair 2012 (Vifa) that orders from importers were not a big headache for local wood firms as most of them have got orders until the second quarter.

However, the biggest problem of the association’s member firms lies in the rising production cost. Most of main materials and production cost have increased by around 11% from the same period last year while the selling price has only risen by 5-7%.

“Firms will have to cut the production costs, create the added value for products through designing, changing product models and marketing strategies to keep their major markets and expand to potential ones,” said Thang.

Huynh Van Hanh, vice chairman of Hawa, said that the export turnover to Japan increased by 27% in the second half of last year and would continue to rise this year as Japan had to reconstruct the country after the serious disaster of tsunami last March. Meanwhile, the consumption did not increase much in the U.S. and even declined by 12% in Europe.

However, China, South Africa and India will be potential markets for local wood firms due to large populations and strong economic growths, according to Hawa.

The wood export turnover reached US$3.9 billion last year, up 14.4% against 2010 and equivalent to 98% of the year’s target. The wood sector only targets to obtain US$4 billion in export turnover this year.

The Vifa 2012 will still take place next month though several economies, especially in Europe, are being affected by the debt crisis and wood products are not basic commodities. Therefore, the organizers hope for the same number of participating companies and visitors as the Vifa 2011.

“International visitors said the quality of fairs in previous years was as good as ones in regional countries, but the scale was quite small. Therefore, we will open an outdoor exhibition covering 1,200 square meters,” Hanh said.

Besides, the organizers will open Factory Visit Tour to help customers visit factories and showrooms of wood producers in Binh Duong, Dong Nai and Long An provinces.

The 5th Vifa 2012 will take place from March 11-14 in HCMC’s District 7 featuring 600 booths of 125 firms. The fair is part of the many furniture fairs of the ASEAN Furniture Industry Council (AFIC) organized in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Myanmar.
